Frequenty asked Questions

Q:  What is the differences required for compliancing motor vehicles and caravans.
A:  Vehicle Safety Standards has to examine, and approve, all submitted documents for demonstrating compliance with the ADRs (Australian Design Rules) before approving the fitment of compliance plates to motor vehicles (and trailers with an ATM Rating over 4.5 tonnes).  “Self-certification” - by the manufacturer - is permitted for trailers and caravans with an ATM Rating of 4.5 tonnes or less.  However, the same level of responsibility applies, and there are severe penalties if the caravan or trailer is not fully-compliant.

Q:  How does an owner know what Australian Standards a caravan has to comply with?
A:  All applicable Australian Standards are stated in VSB-1 (Vehicle Standards Bulletin No: 1).  Some major Australian Standards are AS 3000 (electricity), AS 5601 (Gas), and AS 4177 (couplings, tow-balls, safety chains).  RVs must comply with the particular
version (year of adoption) of the Standard that was in force when the vehicle was manufactured.

Q:  Where can a copy of VSB-1 be obtained?
A: http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/index.aspx

Q:  Where can a copy of the Australian Standards be obtained?
A:  They can be purchased from:   http://www.saiglobal.com - sales@saiglobal.com .

Q:  Does the GTM (Rating) have to be shown on the VIN Plate?
A:  Strangely, no, not legally.  However, some ADRs and state regulations have different requirements, depending on the GTM Rating, so the VIN Plate should include the GTM Rating to avoid problems with enforcement of these rules and regulations.

Q:  What does FCAI stand for?
A:  Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.  This organization represents Australian automotive manufacturers and distributors.
